Mobility modifications are made to homes of older adults with limited mobility. Falls are the leading cause of injuries in adults ages 65 and older.

  • Wheelchair access: Ramps, widen doors, adjust cabinets

  • Plumbing modifications: toilets, showers, bathtubs, and grab bars

  • Replace deteriorated steps, repair missing or unstable handrails, and remove obstructions

We maximize funding by utilizing modern construction techniques and engaging skilled volunteer resources where possible. For example, we can modify a bathtub into a step-in shower for around $1,000, and trained volunteers build 12 - 15 wheelchair ramps each year for the cost of materials and construction supervision. There is no charge to the client.

Critical Repairs

There is a dire need among many older adults who are trapped by clutter and the accumulation of things. A compassionate person can sort and organize the belongings and remove unnecessary items. We match older adults with patient and caring staff and volunteers to declutter homes. A big focus of declutters is clearing safe walkways and making primary living spaces more functional.

 Our Process

We serve older adults and persons with disabilities in various Tennessee counties. We provide much needed home repairs and mobility modifications to empower older adults and those with disabilities to age in place. Why is this important? Our homes are often still the central gathering points for our extended family, and they serve almost as a safety net in a rapidly changing world. Staying in our homes and aging in place maintains a sense of calming order in a familiar environment. It can even contribute to improved health in general, and certainly home is the safest place to be during the current pandemic.

Most applicants have multiple needs in addition to home repairs. For that reason, we work closely with case managers from the referring agencies. Most clients come to us through referrals from health care or social service agencies. Westminster's referral partners continue to expand as we aim to work with those with the greatest needs.

The case manager at the referral agency submits a one-page application to Westminster, which includes client name, address, contact information, income, age, number of people in the home, description of known repairs or mobility needs, and any special considerations. The next step is a joint site visit with the case manager and our construction staff to assess the construction needs.

Our construction staff meet with each client and case manager to determine the scope of work, construction approach, and project budget. We assign staff, volunteers and subcontractors to complete the necessary repairs. Most projects require multiple repairs and/or mobility modifications.

In summary, we address issues impacting each person's ability to age-in-place and remain living in their own home. We prioritize the most critical repairs, mobility modifications, or declutter services needed to make each home safer and more functional, according to the needs of the individual.
